Here I will show you the tools I use to install relays where I need them.
I use these to go up in the attic and find the hole where the power wires are ran down to the gang box. Then I attach the cat 5 to a special tip I will show you in a second and pull the cable back up into the attic.
These rods have threaded ends that let you connect however many you need to get the job done. I think they are 3 feet long a piece.
Here is the tip I use:
I used to just put a hole in the back of the gang box nearest to the stud that the gang box is nailed to so I could try to run the rods down the back of the wall against the stud and then I could see the rods when they got to the hole. I did everything by myself, but if you had 2 people it would make it really easy.
Then I bought the usb camera and things got even easier.
Now I take a laptop up into the attic hook the camera up to it, I place a bright light down in the gang box so it’s easier to spot where I am going with the camera.
It comes with a right angle mirror, it has a light, it’s really long. I wouldn’t operate on anyone with it, ok, I wouldn’t operate on myself with it, but when you get 2 to 3 inches from what your aiming at it works pretty good. That’s why you want to aim for a bright light. When I used it and where I used it there was a gap around the gang box so I could see into the bathroom, through the gap and I could make out the bathroom sink and faucet in a well lit room so it’s really pretty amazing for the price.
If you are making a hole in the gang box, do not DRILL a hole, I went out and bought a long (18″?) paddle bit and I was going to drill a hole in the gang box, but I changed my mind (got lazy?) and just used a hammer with it and knocked a hole in the gang box, and I’m glad I did, there was a power wire right where I made the hole, the bit had a sharp tip on it, but since I was not drilling it cause no damage.
If you want to do it the right way, I replace the gang box with a new one. To get rid of the old one I use a Sawz-all to cut the two nails used to hold it to the stud (one in the top and one in the bottom) I have a bigger one for working on cars, but you get the picture.
