Home Automation, What is it?

Home Automation is an OPTION for your home, kind of like a key-fob for your car.

Do you really need to unlock the door before you get to the door? No, but you do, because you have been trained to do so. Do you need to lock the door after you left because you forgot and don’t want to have to walk all the way back BINGO!

Do you want to turn on the bathroom lights before you get there? Maybe. Do you want to go back and turn the lights off after you thought you were going back but didn’t. Not likely.

Automation – reducing or removing repetitive tasks.

Removing repetitive tasks:
Coming home and having the garage door automatically open when you pull into the driveway and close behind you.
Having the outside lights of your home come on automatically when it get’s dark.
Having kitchen, living room lights, and pet lights come on automatically when it get’s dark, and turn off when you are in bed.
Having Bedroom and bathroom lights come on automatically when it is time to get up.
Turning off all lights when you leave the house in the morning.
Turning on web cameras (home security) when you leave and off when you get home.

Reducing repetitive tasks:

Before – Wake up, get out of bed, turn off ceiling fan, go back to bed, go to sleep.
After – Wake up, turn off ceiling fan, go to sleep.

Before – Notice that it is getting hot in the house, get up, go to fan, turn on fan, go back to couch, in an hour decide you don’t need the fan any more, get up, go to fan, turn off fan, go back to couch.
After – Notice that it is getting hot in the house, turn on fan, in an hour decide you don’t need the fan any more, turn off fan.

Before – Wake up, need a glass of water, walk to kitchen, step on something, wake up whole house, turn on light, get water, turn off light, step on something again, bonus: everyone is already awake, go to bed.
Intermediate – Wake up, need a glass of water, Say “Alexa, turn on kitchen light”, wake up whole house, turn on light, get water, go to bed, Say “Alexa, turn off kitchen light”, bonus: everyone is already awake.
After – Wake up, need a glass of water, turn on light, walk to kitchen, get water, go to bed, turn off light.

Before – Alexa, do this. Alexa, do that. Alexa, do this. Alexa, do that. Alexa, do this. Alexa, do that. Alexa, Alexa, Alexa . . . Honey, Honey, Honey, Honey . . . Dear, Dear, Dear, Dear (not me, I’ve heard stories)
After – do this, do that, do this, do that. do this. do that.

Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey VERY REPETITIVE! ACTUALLY MORE REPETITIVE! So you are going to end up not using it and just pushing a button.

Speakers must know when you are talking to them and not someone else, this requires a wake word and then the command you want them to perform.

Wearables allow you to press a button instead of shouting out the same word over and over and over and over and then say the command you want it to perform.
