. . . And here comes Shenzhen . . .

Heh, Heh, Heh

They say hardware’s hard, and that’s why I don’t sell it.

Walmart – January 31, 2017

$17.88 and $10.00

10 million was a good run, and now we’re done.

Would someone PLEASE! Buy this guy a smartphone! I thought I heard the market was pretty much saturated? I know he can’t make one, but come on, get rid of the flip phone.

The Verge – Qualcomm is making it easier for companies to build smart speakers

So that prediction came out pretty well(It’s a liquidation sale!), lets try another.

The first few to release these speakers are going to make them highly proprietary, cheap, but will only work together, not with any other product.

Finally! I’m sure Silicon Valley is doing excellent background checks in their blind rush.

Tell your assistant to get off their ass.

That’s what comes to mind when I see Google’s Home commercial.

Go ahead and use that for a Apple Watch commercial, that ones on the house.

Now there is a more politically correct way to do that if you are in America:

recode – Best Buy’s new weapon against Amazon: A try-before-you-buy option

Welcome Pakistan!

Thank you United Kingdom 3 downloads in 4 days! and also Poland, the newest member to the double digit download team. Germany, just about guaranteed to be the next triple digit member. And the Netherlands, And 4 (3 in one day) from the U.S.A.

And another for Vietnam.

Here is why I HATE WiFi:

I don’t trust their product as far as I can throw it, which I usually do when the radio degrades to unacceptable in 1 year for $30 – $50 routers, and 6 – 7 months for $130 – $150 routers(Linksys,Netgear) shorter as the price goes up. And NEVER wait to try one out after 30 day return policy(Netgear). First one I had was a linksys AP, lasted 3 – 5 years, then a Linksys router/AP -1 year, then a Netgear – 1 year and a half, then a Netgear 6 months, a linksys 6 months, then a Netgear dead out of the box, passed 30 days, bought another to swap, dead out of the box, TP-Link($40) 1 year – still going. . .

Now we have mesh, at $300 that means the router will work for a month. I have tried extenders to get me to a room 30 feet away and it actually made the signal strength worse.

Now we have a new Eero with a stronger signal and with the base setup you should be able to use it in a 1 – 2 bedroom house. Thank goodness I didn’t get the first model with the weaker radio for a 0 – 1 bedroom house, because my non-mesh router does that! (kind of).

More power! – getting us half-way to some

I think 5G is going to be when I ditch wifi all together.

There’s nothing more exciting than waiting for your house to change 1 degree in temperature

If this does happen fairly quickly, you probably need more insulation.

So back to the sprinkler system . . .

I think I have a way for a normal person to be able to configure their number of stations and station times fairly easy, I will be borrowing from my Pi Wear control app and IoT OtG app.

Just thought I would throw this in, the Apple Watch works very well for a remote when listening to music, seems kind of weird to have a remote control for something that resembles a remote control, but it allows me to connect my phone to my stereo in the car ( bluetooth SUCKS ) and throw the phone on the seat, or hide it out of the sun.

The Verge – Apple will now let hobbyists build their own HomeKit devices

I almost feel sorry for Hue, I definitely feel sorry for the people who bought two hubs now for no reason, PRO PRI E TARY!

I am now going to bite my tongue (a new first!) and allow you to call me names, I deserve it.

Who’s THIS GUY talking about?

He’s CrAzY! . . .

Thermostat update: Got the thermostat Raspberry Pi talking to my Smart Hub, so now I can receive texts when the fan is turned on or off, I can also have the thermostat turn on ANY and HOWEVER MANY devices I want when the temperature is above or below my selected temperature. I also found that there are certain times I don’t want the fan to come on (late at night) so I added IoT OtG Advanced functionality that allows me to disable the devices that I have the thermostat controlling via voice commands (Hey Siri, Text Jar . . . let’s call him J, turn off thermostat) FROM ANYWHERE, then the fan won’t come on, but I still receive texts telling me that the temperature in the basement is above or below the selected temperature, that way I can manually turn on the devices and have a log in my texts that I can review to see where the temperature sits.

I also ordered my:

Walmart – Waterproof DS18B20 Temperature Sensor for Raspberry Pi/Arduino So when I get that we’ll see what I can do, I should be able to query the temperature via voice command and receive an answer via text at the very least.

Also saw this yesterday:

Interesting

Interesting

Still trying to think of a reason to use, but nice to know it’s out there.

$20 thermostat controlled fan is a GO!

Oh crap! In theory I don’t even need a Raspberry Pi to turn on the fan, just a $27 part. Because it comes with more than I need. Theory is wrong, thermostat sends constant signal while temperature is out of range, I need a “toggle” of a signal. Sure there is probably some doodad to accomplish this, but I don’t do hardware (kind of).

Overall pretty happy, December, $349, that should slow Alexa down.

Walt was right, a lull, except at my house.

Thermostat is working like a charm, except right now I have it set up in a cooling configuration, like above, but I am really trying to use access cool air by sending it up stairs, not trying to cool the upstairs from downstairs, so I am going to move the thermostat downstairs, move the wiring to the heat connector and turn on the fan when the temp gets below 77 degrees.

That does work better, less on and off of the fan. Had to move the wires to R and W (It doesn’t matter which wire goes where, the thermostat is just connecting the wires together when it reaches the set temperature), and set the switch to heat.

I also put the pi in the cloud, which opens up some more possibilities I am playing with, stay tuned . . .

Oh, and if you are playing along at home and want to have some kind of log you can replace the print lines with:

print(‘fan is on: ‘ + time.strftime(“%c”))

Advice Received

Hmmm let me see, let me set a reminder on my Apple watch, Asus Zen watch 2, Android phone, or iPhone, hands free, that tells me the echo can now do this.

. . . while I’m in my car OR outside.

. . . lookey there, good thing my watch reminded me, I went outside and got distracted cleaning my car, my pizza would have been on fire!

Whoa! It even reminded me on my non-phone iPhones! I’ll have to put those in my bathrooms!

DOUBLE WHOA! I just SET a reminder from my non-phone iPhone! Definitely bathroom material now!

I can’t believe the Echo is actually SAVING me money by showing me what I can already do!

HANDS FREE (I’m giddy)

Thermostat project: Still going to work on this, manually changing the temperature with my phone when you can just program it with a $50 one doesn’t make me want to jump for joy, but I do first want to make my basement fan turn on when a non-programable thermostat gets to a certain temperature, but I have been helping a friend set up his sprinkler system to the cloud so he can water his yard from work, or cancel watering when his AI (his brain) tells him it will rain, not when the rain sensor says it IS raining. And he is giving me ideas how to make the app better, much is more exciting than temperature control.

I’m sensing a BIG Nest sale is about to happen . . .

. . . and check this out!

Thermostats must be the GOD AWFULL most boring part of home automation, but things are about to get interesting . . .

Since I am not chained to a PROPRIETARY system, the way my house is laid out the basement get’s really cold and the upstairs stays warm (of course) but the reason why I made my smart outlets was so I could plug in a floor fan downstairs and blow the cold air from the basement upstairs, remotely or on a timer. It works REALLY WELL, the basement actually gets warm if I leave the fan on too long. So if I use a Raspberry Pi and make a smart thermostat, I am going to make it so that in the summer when the AC needs to kick on I am also going to turn on the floor fan for a certain amount of time. And in the winter when the heater needs to come on I will kick on the ceiling fans for a certain amount of time. I think my house is about to get it’s college degree!!!

Oh yeah! CO$T: 1 Raspberry Pi and 5 relays = less than $100, how much is a NEST?

WOOHOO!!

Engadget – Raspberry Pi is merging with a coding foundation

Use the Raspberry Pi to find out if your passion is in coding, learn the basics, but try not to focus too much on python and php unless you must. Object Oriented Programming is what you seek, it is The Matrix, it is the rules you must abide by, and the rules you try to break.

If you master OOP you can learn any newer language, Java, Objective C, Swift, Python . . .

Avoid GIT as long as you can, it is the opposite of repetition, and repetition is the key.

When you get a program working, write it out on paper 2 or 3 times, burn it in your brain.

The Echo Show says. . . OUCH!

Whew! My faith in human intelligence is restored.

Business Insider did a survey, from what I can tell, it sounds like they asked people with Amazon tattoo’s if they were planning on buying the new Echo Show.

17% – Said it was the biggest scam since the pet rock.
1% – Pre-ordered (YES 1%!)
Total – 72% – Said they won’t be getting one.

What the HECK is going on ! ! !

People are building smart speakers with phone capabilities!

They are putting touch screens on devices you CAN’T MOVE!

Smart Home Device makers will call 911 for you, FOR $15 A MONTH, after they notify you and give you a chance to cancel, uhhhhh couldn’t I just call 911 then?

IS THIS BIZARO WORLD!

HEY I GOT AN IDEA! LET’S MAKE A MAINFRAME WITH A TOUCH SCREEN!

WHO DOESN’T WANT A MAINFRAME!

AAAAAANYWAY!

Love the new “Hey Siri” “commercial”

So short and to the point. Hey! I don’t have to do ANYTHING I have smart assistant capability on my phone RIGHT NOW!

Need to do another one to remind people they can use it to play music.

Please don’t make me sick of it though, treat it like a Super Bowl commercial, show it once, maybe twice a day at the most expensive time slot.

Text to Voice Messaging – Recorded 5-9-2017, Created on 4-15-2017

YouTube

HA HA HAAAAAA!!!!!

NOT SO FAST!

ENGADGET – Amazon’s Echo family can now make calls and send messages

With this, Amazon has basically turned the entire Echo ecosystem into a pretty robust speakerphone. Ironic considering how badly the Fire Phone flopped, but this feature makes perfect sense for the Echo hardware. When Google first unveiled Home almost one year ago, the company said you’d eventually be able to send text messages with your voice — but that feature still hasn’t materialized.

The feature is even more timely given that Microsoft and Harmon Kardon just announced a Cortana-powered voice speaker yesterday. The Invoke won’t arrive until the fall, however, which gives Amazon plenty of time to press its advantage in the growing voice-activated speaker market.

ACTUALLY IT WAS A MONTH AGO TODAY 4-9-2017 – We had a black snake in our yard A BIG ONE! and I wanted my wife to come look, so I texted her, and I wasn’t sure she would see her phone, so I finally broke down and wrote Text to Voice Messaging.

(Post pic in a little)

Whoa!

OH YEAH! I wouldn’t have been able to do it with Alexa, because I WAS OUTSIDE!

This just gets better and better! (This almost isn’t fair)

Hell, not only were they not first THEY AREN’T EVEN ORIGINAL!

Recode: Amazon invested millions in the startup Nucleus — then cloned its product for the new Echo

LIKE I SAID !

It’s almost not fair

Elise Oras – Alexa Calling Has a Major Privacy Flaw

BGR – You can’t stop people from calling you on your Amazon Echo

To make matters worse, it’s surprisingly difficult to disable Alexa calling once you’ve enabled it. There’s no setting in the app or on the website. You have to actually call Amazon’s customer service and request that the feature be deactivated from your account.

That’s why I won’t do two shows in one day!

I won’t, I won’t do it!

Oh? I just did it? Ok.

So I fixed a minor glitch in the iOS free app, minor, but did take some research, and then I jump over to the Android side and add “Move to Top” functionality ( a little array play) to the Android free app, so look for that tomorrow!

Just tested the Android app . . . ohhh that’s what it was missing, I don’t know if it was the cherry, but it is definitely the next best thing. Version 3.0 very fitting.
